ORE'S FEATURED GEMSTONE: Wulfenite
by Stephanie Pflumm

Because Wulfenite is sometimes found with many of the Copper crystals (Azurite, Chrysocolla), I had assumed they were also from the Copper family. What I discovered is that Wulfenite is a Lead crystal (to be precise a Lead Molybdate) and actually related to Galena. However, Lead and Copper are often found together, which is why these crystals are occasionally associated with each other.

Wulfenite is a favorite among collectors because of its vivid colors and unusual crystal symmetry. It forms in hydrothermal vents and zones around Lead deposits that have oxidized. The oxidization process gives the crystals their unique orange and red colors. Crystals can also be clear, yellow, white or gray.

Crystals commonly grow as flat tabular formations with pyramidal faces at the edges. Twinned crystals can sometimes form psuedo-cubes, and rarely the pyramid edges will be more prominent making the crystal look like two pyramids. Wulfenite can also be found encrusted on stones, in granular masses and as intergrown crystal plates in the holes and crevices of area aggregates.

The Red Cloud Mine in Arizona is known world-wide for its gorgeous red crystals. Wulfenite is available around the globe. Mexico, Morocco, Austria, Yugoslavia, Australia, Wales and Iran all boast beautiful specimens found near Lead deposits or abandoned mines. The stone is named for an Austrian mineralogist, Franz Xaver vonWulfen, who discovered the crystal in the late 1700s.

Lead crystals like Wulfenite tend to be very heavy because of the density of the main mineral. Unfortunately, Lead does not give the crystal much strength, Wulfenite are some of the softest crystals and completely unsuitable for jewelry.

Add this to the fact that the crystal has only been known to Humans for the last three hundred years or so and that equals very little history on this gem.

In my own experience, I have found the crystal to be very helpful at sorting out the opportunity hidden within adversity. Rarely does opportunity come knocking at your door announcing that it has finally arrived in your life. More often, it shows up as an impending trauma or challenge. It seems to work as a guide, leading you to the silver lining that is waiting behind your storm clouds.

If you have found yourself falling into lethargy, Wulfenite can help revitalize your energies. Give you that extra boost to quit whining and start doing what needs to be done in your life. The crystal will also assist in using emotions like hunger, passion and greed to work for your higher good and bring harmony, as opposed to allowing them to run your life and create chaos.

Are you getting ready to face dramatic changes in your life? Moving, children, a new partner, new job? Use Wulfenite to help you accept the upcoming changes and integrate them into your daily routines. Use it as a shock absorber for change, so life's bumps and chuck holes don't send you flying out of control.

You can also use this crystal to help you deal with the roller coaster of everyday life. Learn to accept there are things you cannot control, that can have both a positive and negative affect on your life. Wulfenite teaches you these are not obstacles nor roadblocks, but merely the mountains and valleys you must travel on your path.

Wulfenite is recommended as a Kundalini stone, helping to stimulate a healthy energy flow through all of your Chakra. As a meditation crystal, it can heighten your awareness of guides and beings from other realms and open communication with them. The crystals also activates and balances your second and third Chakra. If you practice astral travel or channeling, Wulfenite may dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes you to reach your meditative state.

Healers recommend Wulfenite for women having trouble with reproduction. It should also be beneficial to your spleen, gall bladder, digestive system and aid in the absorbing nutrients. Patients recovering from long, debilitating illness may receive a renewed strength and vitality from this crystal.

Do not use Wulfenite in any elixirs that you plan to use eternally, Lead is extremely poisonous to Humans.

Have you worked with Wulfenite before? Please share your experiences or thoughts, everyone can benefit from your input since there is still much to learn about this crystal. Post your thoughts on the ORE Gemstone Bulletin Board at http://www.ozarkrockexchange.com/highlights/bbs/index.shtml Or email them to stephanie@ozarkrockexchange.com

SPRING THOUGHTS
A Collection of Poems Celebrating Spring
by Stephanie Pflumm

Spring
bursting buds
exploding seeds
opening up
to new beginnings
facing
with fearless abandon
the bittersweet banquet
reserved for
the living.

--+--+--+--

Spring Promise

Begin.
It is Spring
and the moment
to start
is now.

Join
with Grandfather
as His first
promise of light
colors the dark.

Follow
the example
of the seed.
Open the husk
that protects you
and stretch toward
the light
that will nourish
you.

Grow
in confidence
that your moments
unfold in
divine perfection.

Trust.
When the rain comes
it is for your thirst.
When the sun shines
it is for your hunger.
Share your Harvest
and Abundance will
grace your home.

Know.
That Spring is the promise
of light after dark,
life after death.
Another chance
with every breath
to break new ground
and change the fruit
your path will yield.

Equinox

Swirling winds
switching directions
from the North
from the East
from the South
from the West.
Mother is seeking balance
to shake off Winter's darkness.

Seeds of new life
take their places
in the empty spaces
left by death's cold hands.

Honor the moment that comes
as Night and Day negotiate
a perfect equality
to herald
the returning Sun King
