ORE FEATURES: Rose Quartz
by Stephanie Pflumm

I have been blessed with a special kinship to Rose Quartz stones and crystals. It was this relationship that led me to make Rose Quartz my very first research project when I started ORE FEATURES three years ago. I choose the crystal again today to honor all the places and thoughts this crystal continues to guide me to. In gratitude for all the knowledge and magic Rose Quartz shares with me.

A large raw arrowhead shaped Rose Quartz sits on my altar year round. Its point always aimed in the direction my Medicine Wheel faces. To keep me moving in the right direction. When I am working fairs and expos with the Mobile ORE Store I wear a pink crystal with black Tourmaline, to keep my heart light and joyful during long hours. The Tourmaline keeps me immune from the stray grumpy attitude that may wander by my booth.

My daily prayer or meditation and my Circle Protection were given to me by a Rose Quartz companion I carried for a year. When I'm lost as to which stone should be my next research project, a meditation with Rose Quartz usually brings a sure answer. When I have to be somewhere that I don't feel safe, I wear a strand of Rose Quartz beads as a mobile circle of protection. Every personal prayer pouch I have made, regardless of my intent has included this personal power crystal.

Rose Quartz began much like other Quartz crystals. Molten magma from volcanic activity or through the shifting of continental plates formed massive pipes and lenses as enormous pressures forced this liquid into any empty space it could find. Over hundreds of years these pegmatites cooled, allowing the silicates to interact with other minerals and initiating the growth of crystals.

Unlike other Quartz crystals that can grow into beautifully terminated specimens, it is only under the most rare circumstances that Rose Quartz will terminate into crystal points. Most terminated Rose Quartz specimens grow into micro crystalline structures, with tiny almost imperceptible points. Brazil is the only place that terminated Quartz crystals have been found. In the famous Minas Garis and Poco D'Anta mines.

Rose Quartz is available all around the world. In the US the Custer Mines in South Dakota are reputed to have some of the finest material available in the states. Madagascar is also famous for their Rose Quartz; India, Germany, Africa, Sri Lanka (Romans imported their Rose Quartz from these mines), Scotland, Switzerland, Canada and Spain are just a few of the other localities where this crystal is found.

For several years the color of Rose Quartz was believed to be caused by Manganese and Titanium (Rutiles) inclusions. Before that, geologists theorized the color came from Iron or organic material. Recent studies using new techniques (x-rays and microanalytical methods) have shown that in massive Rose Quartz formations the color is the result of tiny micro-scopic mineral fibers (similar to those found in Dumortierite). These fibers show some similarities to other minerals, yet it is different enough that it is now being considered a new mineral.

These same examinations done on terminated and the highest quality Rose Quartz (sometimes referred to as gemmy Rose Quartz) show that the rosey pinks come from Aluminum and Phosphorous inclusions. The Phosphorous explains why some (very few) specimens will glow in the dark. Crystals of this quality are very sensitive to light and have been known to fade with prolonged exposure to Sun or other harsh lights.

It would appear from these newer studies that there are actually two varieties of Rose Quartz.

Titanium inclusions in this crystal creates a couple of different effects. Massive inclusions are responsible for the milky streaks seen in many Rose Quartz specimens. Well formed Rutile needles grown in the right orientation within the stone will produce asterisms (stars). However, to see these stars, light must shine through the crystal, instead of on it's surface (Ruby and Sapphire stars become visible when light plays on the surface of the gem).

Universally, Rose Quartz is seen as a stone of love, peace and calm. The Chinese Goddess of Peace was traditionally carved from this stone because it was believed to embody Her gentle wisdom. Almost every tradition gives it the power to bring love into your life.

But, more than bringing love from others to you, it is a great teacher of self-love. Providing the strength and courage to love yourself is one of the most important attributes of the crystal. Carrying a Rose Quartz will improve your self-assurance, allow you to forgive yourself and others, give you emotional balance and open your heart to acceptance. Without assurance, forgiveness, balance and acceptance, it is almost impossible to love yourself.

If your heart has been broken by love or life, Rose Quartz can help you heal those wounds. Plus, as you learn to love yourself, you will be less likely to allow yourself into situations where your heart can be broken.

When you are confronted with injustice, or the inappropriate actions of others, this crystal will help you work through your anger in a productive manner. Helping you to react and act in ways that will help resolve the problem and prevent you from internalizing your emotions. It provides a release for destructive or angry feelings without causing chaos. Because sometimes it is necessary to get mad, but it is never healthy not to act on that necessity.

Rose Quartz can help you build an immunity to dangerous emotions like jealousy and greed. Which can eat away at confidence and your love for self, as well as others.

Romans were strong believers in the healing properties of Rose Quartz. They believed it helped to release impurities from the body's cells and fluids. They also recommended it for treating breathing problems, headaches, aching bones and to relieve menstrual symptoms.

The Egyptians and Romans both carved face masks from the crystal. These masks were used to prevent or remove wrinkles and skin blemishes. They also believed the stone would would heal scars and bruises.

The loving and calming energies of Rose Quartz are very beneficial for heart health. It is believed the energies from this stone lowers the blood pressure, helping the heart to work more efficiently. The crystal may be helpful in improving fertility, restoring sexual desire and promoting weight loss.

Personally I have found Rose Quartz to be a great teacher and companion. I have a hard time imagining my journey without my rosey friend.

Queen Of The Forest
by Stephanie Pflumm

Woman Who Walks has several four-legged friends that live in and around her home. Some of them are wild creatures that nest nearby to take advantage of the food and water she keeps available. Others are abandoned, left by uncaring two-leggeds near the wild forests by her home. Since her house sits at the corners of the Dirt and Paved Roads, these abandoned children frequently seek refuge there.

While Woman Who Walks gladly provides shelter, food and love for everyone that graces her yard, it is her mate, The Gardener, that really loses his heart to the unloved critters. That is until she met Queen Camilla, the Virgin Queen of the Forest, who ran so swiftly that not even a blade of grass would bend where she passed.

The frightened kitten, huddling in a snow dressed Tree stole the heart of Woman Who Walks, the moment she saw it. As The Gardener gently coaxed the kitten from it's perch (she was driven up the tree by Dog and Buddha Cat, hoping the two-legged couple would not see it, knowing it would be invited to stay the moment they did) she spoke quietly trying to reassure the shivering infant.

Eventually the kitten was safely inside the warm home and Woman Who Walks instantly began pampering the new arrival. Dog and Buddha Cat rolled their eyes at each other and curled up together in an attempt to sleep away the troublesome addition.

It was The Gardener that discovered the kitten's name, Queen Camilla, Virgin Queen of the Voracians. Her speed and antics astounded and entertained the couple through many cold Winter days and nights. By Spring Queen Cammie was posing quite a threat to many of the wild creatures that lived around the house. While the birds had many safe havens scattered about the yard, the smaller rodents and lizards did not fare as well.
Woman Who Walks found her affections growing daily toward her little Queen. These unexpected emotions caught her off guard and she often lost a moment wondering why she fell so completely for this particular critter.

A year and a day passed with Queen Camilla and Woman Who Walks. Then came the morning that Queen Camilla did not return. Woman Who Walks called all morning and banged on the Queen's dinner plate, but she did not return.

That evening Woman Who Walks went down her dirt path, calling for the Queen and banging her dinner dish. But the Queen did not come home. For three days Woman Who Walks called, and walked and banged, and by nightfall on the third day, she knew that Queen Camilla was not coming home. Woman Who Walks asked the Universe to comfort her little Queen, for she feared the worst. If Coyote or Owl must have her for supper, then let them be swift and merciful, so there is little pain. Though in the deepest of her thoughts she saw the artful Queen dodging and jumping safely away from any danger. Too fast for the quickest predator.
Today I was walking down my own dirt road, and the oldest of the Oak Trees along my path stopped me to tell me a story.

This Spring Loggers started moving onto one of the farms that border Bear Creek, just this side of the National Forest. They moved onto the land with a voracious appetite for Tree, taking out 50 happy, healthy Oaks and Hickorys the first day, 75 on the second. Many more were sure to go the next day, who knew how many before a month could end. An alarm rang through the Forest and a young female virgin cat suggested everyone meet that night under the almost full Moon.

The meeting began very badly. Everyone talking at the same time. Woodpeckers, Squirrels and Insects complaining about housing, Finches and Robins fusing about berries and nuts, Grandmother Spider was shouting about all the fruit being gone, now everyone will be eating the Insects, leaving nothing for her! All repeating the hopeless lament, "what can we do against the two-leggeds machines and magic"?

"Do you know that there are two-leggeds asking that same hopeless question tonight"? A stately voice startled the bickering crowd. The young feline that had suggested the meeting had entered the Forest Room in a most queenly manner, commanding everyone's attention. There was silence as they pondered what appeared to be an absurd question. Why would two-leggeds fear other two-leggeds.

"It is true", explained the Forest Queen. "Two-leggeds that want to protect and honor the Tree feel helpless against the restraint of the two-legged's law. They believe they cannot stop the ones that steal our Tree brothers and sisters". The majestic cat continued past this sad thought. "But we can show them how silly their fear is. Because with a little effort, even we can stop them - at least for a day". And she gathered the crowd closer to share ideas and discuss a plan.

In the morning, just as Grandfather Sun was waking and light was bringing form and function to shadows, the loggers returned to the farm beside the creek. The first two that crossed into the Tree line just beyond the pasture quickly found themselves entangled in a maze of Spider webs. Two other loggers were snickering as they pulled sticky silky strings off themselves. However, as these two sat down in their giant machines they screamed out inappropriate words. Apparently there was a substantial pile of animal excrement on the seats of their front loaders.
One two-legged named Fred was investigating a ruckus over by the small shed where they kept diesel, gasoline and the odd piece of dynamite (for those really stubborn trees). Seems sometime during the night Coyote had chased Skunk under this shed and now Fred poking around frightened poor Skunk who sprayed with all his might as he ran away.

Everywhere there was some small catastrophe. Twigs and pebbles were stuffed in between the teeth of several of the chain saws. Fuel lines, brake lines and even spark plug wires were loose, chewed through or somehow pulled off on every vehicle. Ax handles mysteriously turned into fleeing snakes.

Grandfather was falling into the West Sky before the two-leggeds finally got their machines and equipment cleaned and working again. That day, not a single Tree left the farm, that day all the Trees were safe.

I thanked the Oak Tree for sharing her story and when I came home I decided to write it down, so that Woman Who Walks would know about the little Queen in the Forest. And that we would know how the littlest things can make the biggest difference.
