ORES Featured Gemstone: Tiger Eye by Stephanie Pflumm This quartz composite stone begins as a fibrous blue mineral called crocidolite, which is comprised of iron & sodium. In some resources crocidolite is referred to as asbestos. The transformation begins as clear Quartz becomes imbedded between the fibers of crocidolite. The completed process will result in one of two gemstones; a blue stone called Hawks Eye or the golden brown stone called Tigers Eye. As the gem forms the iron & sodium are completely dissolved, the quartz takes on the fibrous formations & the blue color of crocidolite. This creates the parallel lines within the gem giving it the liquid luster & light movement the stone is so loved for. Even though the iron & sodium dissolve, traces of hydrated oxide of iron deposit between the crocidolite & Quartz, creating the yellows that are common to both Hawks Eye & Tiger Eye. How much of this hydrated mineral is deposited will determine how red, yellow or brown a Tiger Eye will be. The rarer blue Hawks Eye will have only the slightest amounts. South Africa is the only place Tiger Eye forms, near many of that countrys diamond mines. Just outside of Griquatown there are mountains that are made up almost entirely of this gemstone. At one time Tiger Eye was as controlled & costly as diamonds, until two competing traders glutted the market. As a power stone Tiger Eye has a wonderful reputation for attracting wealth, money & luck. However it has some powerful spiritual uses as well. The liquid movement of light across the stone makes it an excellent tool for vision or divination work. Using Tiger Eye with your lower Chakras can bring about a balance of energy between mental & physical health. If you constantly worry over your health, this gem can prevent hypochondria & psychosomatic illnesses. Tiger Eye can also bring calm to stressful environments. Historically Tiger Eye has been used in protective medicine. Roman soldiers would wear engraved stones during battle. Healing eye disorders is one of the most common medicinal uses associated with Tiger eye. It can help slow the flow of energy through the body which makes the gem very helpful in stress related illnesses. Tiger Eye may help alleviate pain & can assist in mending broken bones. Even as a simple clear quartz it grows into elaborate shapes and designs. Each of these Crystal Growth Patterns can bring a different energy to your work. Here is just a small sampling of some of the more common Crystal Patterns. Aperture: By definition, this is a large crystal formation. The crystal forms, creating a hollow crater that can contain fluids. Filling the crater with water or elixirs will allow you to access information from the past, present and future. An Aperture Crystal may be used for lung, liver, pancreas, stomach and other related illnesses. Barnacle: A larger Old Soul crystal that is covered with smaller points. This is an excellent meditation crystal for gaining insight into family or group problems. Bridged: A small crystal growing out of a larger point. This growth pattern helps build a bridge between the inner and outer worlds. This formation aids individuals working to share knowledge on either a spiritual or material plane. Clusters: A grouping of crystal points grown from the same host rock. Cluster crystals help harmonize group energies and can bring peace to family gatherings. The ability to generate high levels of energy (directly related to the number of points grown in each cluster) make clusters wonderful cleansing and charging tools for other gemstones. Double Terminated: Crystals that have grown to a terminated point at both ends. This extremely powerful crystal may be used for astral projection, intensifying dreams, and provide protection for both the spirit and the body. Also an important healing stone, transforming negative into positive. Elestial: Either a layered or etched crystal with multiple terminated points. Unlike a Bridged crystal, these points form along a parallel plane to each other. An enchanted crystal that can bring the heart & mind into sync, help cast off emotional burdens or sustain you through change. Generator: Six faces of a crystal terminating in a point. Small generators make powerful pendulums. Use thiscrystal to magnify energy & stimulate the physical, intellectual, emotional, or spiritual body. A very important healing stone. Key: This crystal will have a three or six sided indentation. The indent will narrow as it enters the main crystal, sometimes terminating in a point. Unlock your hidden self or what you cannot see on the surface of a situation. Rainbow: Fractures within the crystal create some beautiful rainbow effects (which makes it one of my favorite crystals). These sparkling crystals help you cope with negativity & see the miracle of everyday life. The rainbow colors created by the fractures make this an excellent Chakra stone. 7 & 8 Face: Seven or eight faces of a crystal terminating in a point. Brings energy to endeavors & helps to remove obstacles in the way of your goal. Angelic energies have also been attributed to this crystal. Singing: Small terminated crystals that sing when touched together. Twin: Two or more individual points that have grown together in such a way that parts of each crystal are parallel & parts are at opposing angles. You can use this crystal to build relationships (of any kind). Twins are also valuable in bringing groups together & promoting universal love. There are easily dozens more formations that Crystals will grow into. I like to think of them as Mothers answer to snowflakes, no two are ever exactly alike.
