ORES FEATURED GEMSTONE: Selenite by Stephanie Pflumm Selenite, aka Gypsum is a cousin of Calcites. These crystals are two of the three members in the Satin-Spar crystal family. The third cousin is Aragonite. Selenite is a hydrous calcium sulfate, meaning it is composed of oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, calcium & water. It is not a picky mineral, but has found a variety of environments & geological occurrences to grow in. Thin crystals can be slightly bent, however it is not recommended to try it with good specimens. Selenite is only barely flexible & has a quick snapping point. Crystals found in Kentucky, however, have grown in severely curved patterns & flower-like petals. In some very rare instances, water becomes encased in a cavity as the crystal forms. The bubble of water can be seen moving as you rotate the stone. One of the most beautiful Selenite formations in the world is the Cave of Swords in Chihuahua Mexico. Over 97 million years ago water began seeping through ancient limestone formations dissolving the sulfide ores within & producing a sulfuric acid. The water also absorbed large amounts of calcium & as this goo reacted with oxygen & hydrogen Selenite crystals began growing. Specimens from the Cave of Swords are some of the clearest & largest in the world. In dry desert conditions, sand may become trapped inside the crystals as they form. Sandy Selenite formations can take on the shape of an hourglass or the more familiar Desert Rose shape. These Selenite crystals are totally opaque & have been found in large quantities in Oklahoma, Texas & the Sahara Desert. Industrial grade Selenite is more commonly referred to as Gypsum. It is the main ingredient in Plaster-of-Paris & sheet rock. It is also used in concrete & as a flux for earthenware. Selenite formations are found all over North America, Africa, Australia, Italy & Austria. There is very little history on Selenite as a power stone, although its name comes from the ancient Moon Goddess Selene. It is too soft to be a good gemstone. Some nicer specimens are cut into ornamental pieces, since a good polishing can bring out a cats-eye like refraction. You can use the physical flexibility of Selenite to increase your own ability to be flexible in evolving situations. It will allow you to see the true meaning & the superficial aspects at work in your life. Lovers can trade Selenite crystals to help reconcile differences. If you tend to be a couple that has a lot of discussions, you might consider keeping a crystal in the room the two of you share. It can also heighten your sexual energies & improve fertility (another good reason to keep one around the bedroom). If you are trying to build a business Selenite can help you acquire the material things youll need for your venture to be successful. Use it as a sword of awareness to cut through the unconscious assumptions you make each day. Use this crystal to receive images of your past, present & future lives. It can also help clear your mind of the constant clutter our culture throws at us. Healers have used Selenite to see into the body & understand what is needed to heal it. It brings flexibility on the physical plane as well as the mental. Giving strength to bones & new energy to tired inflexible muscles. Selenite is found in the LOVE Stone Power Prayer Pouch from Ozark Rock Exchange.
