ORES FEATURED GEMSTONE: Peridot (Chrysolite) by Stephanie Pflumm Peridot is French for green Olivine or Chrysolite, though some sources also assigned the term Peridot to other crystals. My efforts to track the geological background of this gemstone got very confusing. Olivine is a family of minerals, combining silicate of magnesium with small to large inclusions of iron. While the Olivine group is rather significant, only one crystal is of gem quality. This crystal is normally referred to as Chrysolite or Peridot. Some references also include Moldavites with this group of minerals. While Moldavites have a similar composition, they will not be considered a part of this feature. Another crystal that seems to be commonly confused with Peridot is Chrysoberyl. It is actually harder & heavier than Chrysolite & easy for a jeweler, or expert to know the difference. A Noble Chrysolite (aka: fosterite) is completely free from any inclusions & is perfectly clear. As the amount of included iron increases, the more green the crystal becomes. The most perfect stones are found embedded in rocks such as bassalt, diabases, gabbros & widely distributed throughout Mother Earths crust. Though rare, some of these embedded crystals will form terminated points & are the most valuable specimens. Crystals form deep inside the rocks, then are torn away & thrust to the surface during volcanic or seismic activity. Large deposits of high quality gemstones are becoming difficult to find. Though, smaller stones, some still suitable for jewelry are found in many locales. Near Mt. Vesuvius, New Mexico, Arizona, Bohemia & possibly Austria are some of the locations where small, gem quality stones are found. Occasionally Chrysoberyl from Brazil, Ceylon & India will be sold as Peridot. Green Tourmalines & Garnets are also traded as Chrysolite. At one time even Moldavites were sold as Peridot gems. In the cathedral of Cologne, the shrine of the Three Holy Kings is supposed to be adorned with an extraordinary Emerald. In reality it is a Peridot. Chrysolites history as a power stone goes back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used the crystal for healing, during the middle ages it was used for protection from evil or to bring friendship. Using a Peridot to work with your Chakras can be tricky. While the stone works well to cleanse & balance the solar plexus & heart Chakras, it can actually prevent the balancing of the other five. The crystal creates a shield of protection around the wearer, which will interfere with aligning the other Chakras. Simply remove your stone before beginning your work. Once completed, the Peridot will prevent outside energies from interfering with your balance. Ancient Magicians would often set a Chrysolite crystal in gold to enhance its protective powers Its heart related energies are also helpful in matters of love. Peridot will promote openness & bring a more intelligent perspective (protecting you from being swept off your feet). Youll be more comfortable with yourself, more confident & less likely to get your ego bruised. Calm raging tempers with the warm, caring energies this gem gives. Learn to forgive yourself & gain insight from your experiences. It also allows you to let go of your jealousy & other obstacles to your spiritual growth. Liquid medicines & potions were often given to patients in vessels made from Peridot. It was believed the crystal increased the potency of the medicine. Its healing energies are helpful in treating heart, liver, spleen & intestinal disorders. Peridot will regulate your bodys cycles, keeping you physically balanced. During childbirth, it may be helpful in stimulating contractions & preparing the birth canal. The crystal is also beneficial for relieving depression & may assist in getting past postpartum issues.
