ORES FEATURED GEMSTONE: Moldavite by Stephanie Pflum Moldavite is a mysterious gemstone. Theories abound as to how it came to be. Moldavite, a type of Tektite* is only found in limited areas in the Czech Republic. In the hills, valleys (impact craters) and waters of the Moldau and Vltava rivers. In many ways, Moldavite resembles Obsidian. It is a singly refractive glass-like substance with many included minerals (Iron, Magnesia, Aluminum, Lime etc.), but is primarily made up of Silica (Quartz); anywhere from 70 to 80%. Hundreds of minute air bubbles are found in Moldavite, but not in Obsidian. Obsidian often contains microscopic crystals, Moldavite does not. The stone is also confused with Peridot, especially the lighter colors. Iron is the mineral which provides the greens in both Peridot and Moldavite. Polished and faceted specimens of both are almost impossible to tell apart without laboratory testing. Original theories stated that Moldavite was created when lightening struck sand rich in Quartz. However, since this didnt happen in other parts of the world where similar conditions existed, geologists remained skeptical. In the early 1900s a Professor Suess began to theorize that Moldavites formed as a result of a series of major meteor impacts in the area we now call the Czech Republic. The most popular conjecture today describes an intense meteor shower that impacted the region between 15 and 20 million years ago. Great pressures and heat caused by the collision created a sort of instant magma, which exploded back into the atmosphere. This molten mass then fell back to Mother Earth in droplets. As these drops fell back through the atmosphere the friction against the cooling magma created the rough linear markings so common to Moldavite. For many centuries Moldavite had very little value as a gemstone. Before the Meteorite theories began to be accepted, the stone could be purchased for less than 10¢ a gram. (Today, Ive seen it retailing for as high at $20 a gram. Moldavites at ORE are priced between $2 and $3 per gram) The Czech government, recognizing the value of this natural treasure is becoming more restrictive in releasing specimens. Because of its brittle nature, erosion has a very debilitative effect on the stone. Large specimens are just not available. It is very rare to find pieces much larger than 20 or so grams. Since it is so easily damaged, it can only be mined by hand, adding to its high costs. Moldavites history in magic and spirituality begins in the Middle Ages. It was believed to be one of the stones in the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail also fell from the skies and was said to give eternal youth and immortality to anyone that drank from it. Today, many of us are working towards a Spiritual Evolution in Mankind and Moldavite has become a very important stone. With its combined cosmic and earth energies it has been very beneficial to those amongst us, who are for the first time incarnated in physical, human bodies. It helps these celestial souls understand and cope with the physical limitations of the human body. Moldavite is an excellent meditation stone, helping to awaken and focus the Third Eye or sixth Chakra. Use it to aid in visualizing eternity and bring that vision into your daily life. It will assist you in establishing a connection with the Universe while teaching you to appreciate your earthly gifts. Holding Moldavite in your hands will help you feel not only the message you are receiving, but the communicator that is sending it. It allows you to let go of old, unnecessary habits and behaviors, removing even ancient emotional wounds. Using Moldavite in conjunction with Quartz crystals will amplify and stabilize the energies and meditations you receive. There is very little healing information available about Moldavite. The Iron inclusions will help with anemia and give physical strength. It is a great heart healer and can magnify the healing energies in other stones. If you work with crystals and gemstones, you may want to wear a Moldavite. It will aid you in calling upon the Universe for assistance in healing, while increasing the output of the other crystals you are working with. *Tektite: Are believed to have formed in much the same way as Moldavite, however, they lack the greens found in the more sought after stone. Most Tektites tend to be brownish or black in color and are found outside the Czech Republic.
