ORE’S FEATURED GEMSTONE: Carnelian
by Stephanie Pflumm

Carnelian is a survivor’s stone. As the host stone (the stone that the gem forms in) erodes away, the harder Carnelian becomes free, surviving the ravages of time.

This gemstone is a member of the Chalcedony family. Chalcedony can be an opaque stone, as in Jasper, Onyx or Agates; or they can be translucent like the Carnelian.

A silica (Quartz) based gem, Chalcedony pseudomorphs the crystalline form of whatever mineral becomes included as the hydrothermal solutions cooled.

The red in Carnelian comes from ferric oxide (rusted iron). If the ferric oxides become hydrated, the gemstone will be more yellow or brown.

The color of a yellow or brown Carnelian can be altered by exposing the stone to heat. This removes the excess moisture, making the gem more red & increases the value. It is not uncommon for these less desirable stones to be commercially heated & resold for jewelry settings.

Carnelians form in cavities, cracks & crevices of volcanic rocks. As the more porous volcanic rock disintegrates, the round nodules of gemstones are loosened & swept away into streams & watersheds.

Many deposits of Carnelian come from these stream beds. India, Brazil & Uruguay all have generous sources of jewelry quality stones.

Blocks of Carnelian weighing over 3 pounds have been found in the Bajpipla Hills on the lower Narbada River. Pebbles of Carnelian & other Chalcedony are found in almost every river in India.

Siberia, Dutch Guiana, Queensland & Japan have insignificant deposits of Carnelian. The Japanese traded strands of the gem with the Dutch at one time.

Geologist consider a uniformly red Carnelian with no faults “masculine”, a pale or yellow/red gemstone “feminine”.

Egyptians used Carnelian to prevent anger, envy, & hatred. Renaissance magicians kept a Carnelian amulet in the home to protect themselves from enchantments & to guard against storms.

This versatile power stone can be used for protection, healing, harmonizing engeries & more.
Believed to prevent depression, the gemstone actually helps build self-confidence & courage. Giving the user a stronger sense of self & a more optimistic outlook.

Carnelian works with any of the first four Chakras, helping to increase physical energy.

Speakers & performers should carry a Carnelian. It attracts the right words to the speaker, gives a performer confidence & improves your sense of drama.

Use a Carnelian to cleanse other gemstones of harmful energies. Or to bring harmony into your home. It will also help your reconnect your spiritual self with your physical self.

As a healing stone, it promotes long life. While other stones surrounding it dissolve with the wear of time, the Carnelian lives on.

It strengthens the blood, helping it to clot. Some sources say it can prevent nosebleeds & can assist in healing cuts. It also eliminates toxins from the body & prevents stress related health problems.

Use Carnelian to stimulate healthy sexual energy or protect against skin disease. It may also be helpful in treating gall stones, kidney stones, the spleen, or pancreas.

You can find Carnelian in the HEALTH Stone Power Prayer Pouch from Ozark Rock Exchange.

TURNING THE WHEEL

by Stephanite Pflumm
As Life's Wheel turns from one season to the next, I try to honor those aspects which have blessed my life.
One way I do this is with ceremonies like the one I shared in the last issue. I don't always have time to prep & perform an elaborate ritual (Life Happens). So another way I honor the turning of the wheel is with GiveAway Pouches.
As each new season begins, I choose four gemstones or crystals to represent the four cardinal directions within the wheel, East, South, West & North.
How I choose stones for each direction will vary from season to season. Frequently I use Amethyst or Quartz in the West & Rose Quartz in the East. I have used Garnets for both North & South, Jaspers in the South, Hematite in the North. Sometimes I will choose a stone just for it's color - like a blue Turquoise to represent Father Sky, or a Snowflake Obsidian for Winter’s weather.
During the first full Moon of the season, I will charge all four stones on the altar for that season. In the winter, the four stones are set out on the North altar. For Grandmother Moon's second full phase, I will charge the stones on the respective altars for the direction they represent. North in North, East in East etc.
Finally during the season's last full Moon, I will place the four stones out to receive a charge on that season's altar again.
As I walk through a season, I watch for guidance & blessings from the Universe. As I receive these blessings or teachings, I save a thought (written on a piece of paper) or a token of the event.
I will also carry the four stones with me to special events, or in circle, so that when I give them back to the Universe, they will carry my joy & gratitude with them.
As the last New Moon within a season approaches, I begin preparing my Give Away. The giveaway is a simple gesture, but I put serious meditation into how or where it is presented.
To turn the wheel from North to East, I have climbed up (ok I’m a tomboy) trees to leave my pouch in the highest branch I could find. I have buried pouches as West turned North.
One of my most wonderful opportunities was to be in Toronto Ontario between Summer & Fall of 1998.
My first night in Toronto, Grandmother was Full & I set out my four Summer stones for their final charge of the season. Then as Grandmother began waning I presented a Giveaway to Lake Ontario. I can hear the Lake water’s whispering even now, as I remember sitting in that warm Canadian sun & letting the pouch splash.
That pouch contained:
Green Aventurine for Summer’s growing gifts
Amethyst for the dreams & visions that come from the West
Pyrite a woman’s stone for Mother Earth in the North
Crystal Quartz for illumination & learning in the East
plus a money token from a new job &
these lines on a piece of recycled paper:

I bring my stones
To honor the waters
of Lake Ontario
& to honor
Life’s Wheel turning.
Mother
Father
Fire
Water
thank you
for blessing
this daughter.

Here is a brief table of some possible stones to associate with each of the four directions:
EAST - Aventurine, Green Jasper, Rose Quartz, Quartz Crystal, Sunstone
WEST - Amethyst, Blue Lace Agate, Lapis Lazuli, Moonstone, Selenite
SOUTH - Red or Yellow Jasper, Amber, Tiger Eye, Carnelian, Garnet, Diamond
NORTH - Hematite, Obsidian, Agate, Peridot, Turquoise, Malachite
These are just suggestions. For instance, I have used the Garnet for a North stone as well as a South. This is just a guide to get you started. Always use your own feelings & intuitions to choose what works best for you.
