ORE’S FEATURED GEMSTONE: Calcite

Like the ubiquitous Quartz Crystal, Calcite crystals are found everywhere. About 4% of the Earth’s surface contains some of type of Calcite.
This calcium carbonate will form during any type of geological event. It occurs in all types of rock formations, in fact Calcite serves as the cement that holds sandstones & shales together.
Similar to Tiger Eye & Moonstone, Calcite consists of fine fibers, compressed under extreme pressures, to create a satiny & highly refractive surface.
Given enough heat & pressure, it will become Marble or Mexican Onyx. Along with Aragonite & Gypsum, these stones make up the Satin-Spar mineral family.
While considered very common, the variety of ways this crystal can form is far from that. Over 300 different crystal formations have been identified, which can combine to create thousands of variations on the Calcite theme.
One of the more beautiful & rare Calcite crystals is the Dogtooth Spar or Dogtooth Calcite. This crystal grows in a double pyramid or dipyramid with an elongated point resembling a dog’s tooth. Specimens can be crystal clear to an amber/orange.
Cave formations like Stalactites, Stalagmites, Soda Straws, Cave Pearls, etc. are also types of Calcite formations. Some geologists believe that caves & caverns are created by the constant percolating of acidic waters through the Earth’s surface & dissolving the calcium carbonate rich limestone.
As these Calcite rich waters enter a dry cavern, the water begins to evaporate & precipitate (rain) the Calcite. The result is a very pure, clear Calcite with occasional inclusions of iron & other minerals.
Calcite has an important environmental impact. Sea organisms (Corals, Algae, etc.) are nourished & grow from Calcite created by drawing carbon dioxide out of the water. By utilizing the carbon dioxides in the water to accomplish this, more CO2 is pulled from the atmosphere to dissolve in the ocean creating a carbon dioxide filter for the planet. Helping to alleviate the green house effect.
Some theories contend this CO2 filtering process was an important factor in creating an inhabitable Earth.
Clear specimens of Calcite are referred to as Iceland Spar, even though the majority of these pieces now come from Mexico.
This clear crystal has a unique double refraction quality. Take a piece of paper & draw a line on it. Set your piece of clear Calcite over the line & you will see twin lines, side by side.
This doubling effect also works in using Calcite as a power crystal. It can intensify energies you are trying to create, doubling the output of your work.
If you have a tendency to be lazy, carry Calcite as a companion stone. It will help you work through challenges that normally would slow you down. Gives you the energy to put your thoughts into action.

ROCK STORY

I did not know what to believe. I knew what I had been taught to believe. But those beliefs left more questions, not answers. And some of it was just hard to believe.
My Significant Other was (and still is) a zealous atheist. This was a challenging distraction to believing anything.
Ultimately, the not knowing was too much . . . and I took a very bold risk. Of course, at the time I did not see it as a risk. I felt I had a right to know.
If Spirit/God/Wakan Tanka is truly part of this universe, my life, I not only had the right to know, but the duty to honor.
So I requested proof. “A simple sign”, I said. “A cross, where I least expect to find it. So I will know when I see it, that this is Your sign”.
Days passed into weeks that grew into months. After a couple of years, I forgot about my request.
Besides something else began consuming my energies. Owning a home for my little family. A fairly daunting goal for a single working mom. So I called on some old friends for help . . . the Trees. I can’t explain why at that time, I choose to request their help. Except for this spiritual connection I had always felt. Somehow, I knew they were going to assist me.
Within six months we were moved into our new home. I certainly had to believe something. It was then that I initiated my study of magic. Not slight of hand, but systems of honoring & manifesting the natural energies around us.
Amidst my new studies were ambitious plans to fill my new yard with flowers. On top of an Ozark Mountain, that meant moving rocks. Some of them very big rocks.
In fact this had become one of my favorite pastimes. Digging out large rocks & filling the holes with flowers & shrubs.
One delightful sunny day I proceeded to remove what appears to be a moderate size rock to make room for crocus bulbs. About thirty minutes into my effort, it became obvious this was no small stone & no easy task.
Normally at this point I would recognize the futility, pile the dirt back onto the stone & move on.
But I didn’t.
I kept working on it. Stopped for lunch, decided it was time to give up, but started digging again when I got back to the stone.
After two hours, the rock was finally loose enough that I knew I was going to get it out of the ground. I was thinking what a fine stone this is going to be for the wall the Significant Other was building.
When the stone was finally loose enough to remove from the rather large hole I had created, the only way to get it out was to roll it.
With all my remaining strength I rolled the stone on its side, then flipped it over & out of the hole.
On the bottom of the rock was a cross. Not the christian crucifix, but a symmetrical cross, intersecting at the center, pointing to the four directions.
Today, I know what to believe.
