ORE’s Featured Gemstone: Rose Quartz
by Stephanie Pflumm

Rose Quartz is a Dioxide of Silicon, or a quartz crystal. It is found in pegmatites which are the residual portion of molten magma that were the last to crystalize. Pegmatites form in dikes, pipes & lenses. While cooling these pegmatites swell or are pinched off, creating cavities from inches to miles wide. It is inside these cavities that crystals form.

Often pegmatites are altered through hydrothermal action and the inclusion of minerals such as chlorites, sulfides & manganese oxides. It is the manganese that gives Rose Quartz its pink color. Rose Quartz is found in Brazil, United States & Madagascar.

Some other crystals that form in altered pegmatites include calcite, fluorite, pyrite & zircon.

Rose Quartz is the most versatile gemstone you can have in any collection. It is my personal favorite & I consider Rose Quartz an important ally.

Rose Quartz has long been considered a love charm, often exchanged by bride & groom as an expression of unconditional love. It is associated with the 4th chakra (the heart) an can be used to heal emotional wounds, bring inner peace, reduce your resentments and open your heart.

For healing, Rose Quartz can be used to reduce trauma and bring balance to raging hormones. Its ability to calm & relieve tension has also made it useful in lowering high-blood pressure & can be a stimulate to the circulatory system. Clearer skin, fewer wrinkles & a softer complexion are also healthy by-products of this gemstone. Placed on your thymus, it may decrease coughs & soothe lungs.

Rose Quartz makes an excellent companion gemstone. Carry one in your pocket, in a pouch around your neck or attached at your waist. It will help to keep your love flowing on even the most challenging days.

Used with Amethyst, Rose Quartz is very powerful in protection rites or for keeping you safe. I keep an unpolished Rose Quartz on my altar, always pointed with the medicine wheel (it is facing west now). It seems to help me stay focused.

Rose Quartz rarely forms in crystal points, if you are lucky enough to have one, it can produce a very powerful loving energy that will become a permanent part of your life.

Rose Quartz can be found in 3 of Ozark Rock Exchange’s Stone Power Prayer Pouches; Love, Happiness & Protection.

Cleansing Your Stones
by Stephanie Pflumm

If you intend to use gemstones for a specified purpose, it is important that you clear each stone before you begin any work with them.

There are several ways to “cleanse” a gemstone. Use what is comfortable & feels right for you. There are no unbreakable rules.

This is a quick, easy method for clearing positive & negative energies that may be harmful to you. I like using an amethyst for this rite, however your own hands will work also.

While making a counter-clockwise circle around the stone, ask that all positive & negative energies within the stone that may harm you be removed & banished. Repeat three times. I usually add three breathes after completing my circles to be sure harmful energies are blown away.

A sage smudge is also an excellent cleansing method. I recommend regular clearing with sage smudge for “tools” you work with. I use garden sage, I grow myself. However it is a little pungent for some. White sage is available in many stores, & grows well in some climates. Its smoke is somewhat milder.

Water is the universal cleanser. Be careful of your source though. For best results, try to obtain natural spring water (not the kind from the grocer’s shelf). Just a few hours south of me is Mammoth Springs - the second largest fresh water spring in the world. Your local conservation agent could advise you on springs in your area.

If you have to use tap water, allow the water to sit for a few days. Perform the removal rite from above & it should be good to use. You may try to charge your water, after clearing during a new moon.

Remember new moons occur during the day, be sure to set your vessel out during sunrise & before sunset.

A friend shares another way to use tap water: “Taking regular tap water -- add some rose petals to the mix -- and stir counter clockwise while you think about purifying your water solution. Boil the water until it is pink from the rose petals and let cool. Pour immediately into water jar containers and seal tight..........I use this to clean all my altar items (gemstones, candle holders, etc)..... and it has worked rather well for me for removing all negativity from all items.”

The next new moon is November 8. Any moon during autumn should be especially powerful for water work, since water is the element associated with West.

O.R.E. would love to hear you favorite methods for clearing & cleansing tools. Please email your input, & let me know if it’s ok to share in the next O.R.E. Feature.
